A 2 storey Edwardian property in the South Hampstead conservation area has been extensively rebuilt to provide a contemporary home (designed by http://www.bubblearchitects.co.uk/) behind a retained façade that includes 8 bedrooms, 6 bathrooms, with a cinema and fitness room located in a large newly constructed basement. A centrally located top lit open rise structural glass stair brings daylight into the heart of the home.
Contiguous pile retaining walls in combination with underpinning were used to create the basement underneath the whole footprint of the house, and extensive strengthening of the existing masonry was required to cope with the new challenging load paths. The existing timber floors were strengthened using composite forms of construction, reducing vibration to a minimum.
